A major snowstorm just rolled through our area which means it's time to hammock camp!
Winter hammock camping is amazing! Most of my friends at home think I'm crazy, but I think it's one of those things you have to be an outdoor nut like me to try. Once you do, you get hooked pretty easily.
In this video, my friend Russ from "OutsideMichigan" and I hike out on the North Country Trail for another winter hammock camp. This time, right on the tails of a fresh snowstorm that hit southern Michigan.
The video is a journal of sorts of the camp, but I also take some time to talk about some of my logic regarding winter camping. Particularly I talk a bit about collecting firewood, some of my favorite foods, exploring near rivers and creeks among other things.
For the most part, winter camping is something I do to get away from it all. Much of my "day job" is spent working with people and in front of a computer screen, so it's nice from time to time to be able to get out and enjoy what God has created for us to enjoy without the distractions that permeate many other aspects of my life. Winter camping is serene in many ways. It's a bit less stressful than in other seasons as you don't have as many bugs or critters to contend with too.
My only suggestion for anyone crazy enough to try it is to educate yourself and prepare your kit mindset in such a way that will keep you safe.
Winter camping comes with its own set of dangers in that you have to be prepared in case the weather takes a dive on you. Having the right clothing and shelter setup will go a long way in allowing you to have a safe and enjoyable winter camping experience.
