These six symphonic epigrams are short orchestral pieces that show off Pijper's excellent orchestral writing skills. One can see hints of the bi-tonality that would become so prominent in his later works.

The score is dedicated: "On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Concertgebouw Orchestra".
