In 2019, a panel at the ATM Seminar was asked where urban air mobility would be in 20 years. But views confidently expressed then – such as air taxis over Paris for the 2024 Olympics – have been proven to be overoptimistic with the current pace of progress.
Seven years on, the question came back in blunter form. "Will the UAM bubble burst?" was put to a panel at the Air Transportation Research & Development Symposium (successor to the ATM Seminar) held in Delft in June.
Moderated by Dirk Schaefer (EUROCONTROL), it brought together R. John Hansman (MIT), Joseph Post (University of South Florida), Jörn Jaeger (formerly Volocopter), Mario Cano (Indra), David King (Vertical Aerospace) and Joost Ellerbroeck (TU Delft).
