Part 4, of this 4-day solo canoe trip series, first canoe trip of spring, 2018: As I cleaned up the blowdown in this campsite, I found this jack pine tree top that had snapped off and come down like a big dart, impaling itself over a foot into the ground. Branch shrapnel was also strewn about. Imagine if this had come down on people sleeping in a tent! It can be scary camping in an old, senescent boreal stand that is falling apart. Boreal trees are short lived, and usually the old ones are even-aged, having been born in the same fire, in this case somewhere between 100 and 120 years ago. When the stand starts to fall apart, it can be very hazardous.

I forgot to insert this clip into Part 3 of this series: “Blowdown Hazard Campsite”, link here: youtube.com/watch?v=E4ir5HDTa-I

More to come in this series!
The entire series will be linked in my playlist: “Solo Canoe 4-day Trip – Spring 2018”, parts to be added as I get them done: youtube.com/watch?v=28lYHA7OKuI&list=PLAy7lnVQVxjMEU6SxBrZa4LhUWwNOz8Tp
