Director of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and a biomedical systems engineer, Guru Madhavan offers a compelling perspective on the practical and cultural dimensions of engineering in his book Wicked Problems: How to Engineer a Better World. In conversation with journalist Rebekah Ward, Madhavan discusses how to build a better collective future.

Guru Madhavan is the Norman R. Augustine Senior Scholar and Senior Director of Programs at the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He is an award-winning author of essays and books, including Applied Minds: How Engineers Think and Wicked Problems: How to Engineer a Better World.

Rebekah F. Ward is a print and multimedia reporter with investigative chops. Since early 2023, she has been the Climate & Environmental Reporter for The Houston Chronicle, covering everything from hurricanes and rising tides to Superfund sites and the unequal impacts of pollution in Texas’ famously zoning-free city. Before moving to Houston, she worked for the Albany Times Union as an investigative reporter, where she received the paper’s inaugural Joseph T. Lyons fellowship.

In searing poems and raw letters, Amit Majmudar , Ragini Tharoor Srinivasan, and Chi Rainer Bornfree confront solitude and the false promise of “normal.” From post- 9/11 profiling to pandemic estrangement, their words are woven with pain, power, and transformation as they display how language both fractures and binds. In conversation with Rich Levy, they discuss how the written word shapes memory and hope. Ragini Tharoor Srinivasan is a scholar of South Asian and Asian-American literature at Rice University. Her books include Overdetermined (2025), What is We? (2025), and the co-written memoir The End Doesn’t Happen All at Once (2025). She is also a co-editor of the award-winning volume Thinking with an Accent (2023). Chi Rainer Bornfree is the co-author of the epistolary memoir of the Covid-19 pandemic, The End Doesn’t Happen All at Once, along with Ragini Tharoor Srinivasan. Holding a PhD from UC Berkeley, they have taught at Bard, Princeton, and New York state prisons. They live in the Hudson Valley. Amit Majmudar is a diagnostic nuclear radiologist based in Westerville, Ohio, where he lives with his wife and three children. Majumdar’s recent and forthcoming books include Twin A: A Memoir (2023), The Great Game: Essays on Poetics (2024), and Things My Grandmother Said: Poems (2026). Rich Levy is a poet, an alum of the Iowa Writers Workshop, and the Executive Director of Inprint, a literary organization in Houston, TX, since 1995. His poetry collections include Why Me? and the letterpress chapbook, One or Two Lights, while his poems and essays have appeared in various publications. He is a member of the Texas Institute of Letters.
