Why your master sounds dull and lifeless next to a reference track, even though it isn't missing top end.
Most people hear a dull master and immediately reach for an EQ to add high end. That usually makes it worse. The problem normally isn't the top end at all. It's that you've squashed the life out of the mids.
Heavy compression on the mix bus flattens everything between 1 and 3k. That's the range your ears are most sensitive to, and it's where a track feels forward, present, and alive. Flatten that range and the whole master sounds dull no matter how much top end you pile on.
So before you reach for EQ, pull the bus compression back. Nine times out of ten the presence and life come back on their own.
