Why your bass feels too loud, and the two-step trick for a fat, solid low end.
When the bass feels too loud but turning it down makes the whole song feel small, the bass usually isn't the problem. It's fighting the kick for the same space in the low end.
Step one, sidechain the kick and bass against each other so when one moves, the other gets out of the way. Now they're not competing for the same frequencies on every hit.
Step two is the part most people skip. Send both the kick and the bass to their own bus, and put a compressor across that bus to squeeze them back together. So you've separated them with the sidechain, then glued them back into one unit with the bus compression.
The result is a big, solid, heavy low end that you simply can't get by pulling the bass fader down.
How do you handle your kick and bass? Drop it in the comments.
