Why mastering and assessing your master should happen on different days.
Most engineers master a track and judge it in the same session. The problem is your ears are too deep in the instruments. You're still hearing the kick, the vocal, the guitar individually instead of hearing the song as a whole.
The fix is simple. Master on one day. Listen on the next. Even if you mastered on your mix bus, export the track as a stereo file. That single move switches your brain from mix engineer to mastering engineer.
The next day, sit down in the same room, on the same speakers, against the same references. Now you're listening like a consumer. You hear what they hear, not what you spent hours building.
