Why your kick has no punch even after you keep boosting it, and the tool that actually fixes it.
The punch in a kick isn't where most people think. It's not in the bottom end. It's in the click, the attack right at the front of the hit. So no matter how much low end you boost, the kick still won't cut through.
Most people try to EQ that attack in, and they end up fighting the snare for the exact same space. The result is a harsh mix and a kick that still doesn't punch.
Use a transient designer on the kick instead. It lets you bring up the attack without dragging in all the surrounding frequencies that compete with everything else. Now the kick punches cleanly and the mix doesn't get harsh.
