One of the most prolific artefacts made by early humans was the hand axe. Thought to have been used as cutting tools hand axes can be found in many different sizes and shapes. However, some are so big or so small that they couldn't have been very practical. Were they symbolic? Were they used in rituals? Or maybe they played a role in attracting a partner?
