During the Ice Age Malta was, at times, connected to Sicily by a land bridge which enabled animals to make their way there. From hippopotami and elephants, to deer and bears, Malta was home to many Ice Age animals at varying times between 180,000 and 10,000 years ago. Fossilised remains have been found in various deposits around the Maltese islands.
