Liam, a conservation and environmental science student from Wheaton, Illinois, transferred to UW-Milwaukee from a local community college. “I definitely wanted to get out of Illinois and grow as an individual on my own,” he says. “UWM was a great choice. I’m an hour and a half from home, so I have that independence but it’s not difficult to visit family. I love the city, too. It’s a lot more low-key than Chicago.”
And he’s gotten hands-on experience in his major, from being part of the UWM Conservation Club to interning with Waukesha County as a natural land management technician. He’s also worked at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center as part of his environmental science coursework. “It was really beneficial,” he says. “It wasn’t just sitting in a classroom — I got to work with the professionals there and see how the nature center works behind-the-scenes.”
