Jim Cook, UWM distinguished professor emeritus of chemistry and biochemistry, and an emeritus member of the Milwaukee Institute for Drug Discovery, has devoted the bulk of his career to drug research and development. He holds more than 100 patents. One of his drug compounds has FDA approval for clinical trials for the treatment of depression, and it looks promising for the treatment of schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s disease. His work played a key role in elevating UWM to becoming a top-tier, R1 research university. He received the Honorary Alumni Award at the 2026 UWM Alumni Association’s Awards Evening.
