(2018) Sadler's Kitchen - Jacksonville, Texas
Most people don't want to go to jail. Most people haven't been to Sadler's Kitchen. Since 1943, the Sadler family has been feeding Jacksonville, Texas. And in 1995, grandson Rob Gowin walked away from a corporate career to keep that legacy alive. He moved the whole operation into the old city jailhouse. The 1930s jailhouse. The one that used to be the police station, the tax office, and home to every outlaw Cherokee County could round up.
The bar is built on the old tax desk. The female cell is now the most romantic table in East Texas. And you walk in through the kitchen, which is honestly the right way to enter any restaurant worth going to.
The sign out front says Beer. Pies. BBQ. That's not a menu. That's a mission statement. We're talking brisket burgers stacked with melted cheese, fresh vegetables, BBQ sauce, and a fried egg on top. Pulled pork on Texas toast with mango salsa and slaw. Fried green tomatoes made with Jacksonville-grown tomatoes. Chicken fried steak that East Texans will tell you is the real deal, and East Texans are the harshest critics on earth when it comes to battered cow.
And then there's the pie. You do not leave Sadler's without the pie. The icebox pies, strawberry and chocolate, are what people dream about on the drive home. They might be what people drive to Jacksonville for in the first place.
