This is very common with silkier hair types.
When your hair is healthy and smooth, the strands stick together easily. That gives you soft, defined clumps but it also prevents curl stacking, which is what creates fullness at the root.
To increase volume, you need a little friction, so the hairs don’t cling together so tightly.
That can come from:
• Light layering in your haircut
• Or targeted texture and grit at the roots
Even a small mist of dry shampoo or texture spray at the root can create enough separation to help the hair lift and stay lifted, almost like gentle teasing without the damage.
It’s always a balance between softness and structure. More softness creates smoother clumps. More friction creates more fullness.
