Centipedes have a frightening image of their numerous legs and painful bites. But did you know that some samurai loved them? If you look at the armor of Date Masamune's retainers and Shingen Takeda's troops, the decoration of their Japanese swords, and their family crests, there are a great number of centipede designs.
Why were centipedes, now considered pests, so beloved by samurai? There are actually various theories.
1.They are the messenger of Bishamonten (One of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune)
2.The many legs represent strong progress
3.They never retreat but always move forward
4.They prey on strong insects such as cockroaches and spiders
Centipedes are written in Japanese Kanji characters as "one hundred legs," which seems to have been a symbol of strength.
But ummm… I have to apologize to the samurai but I prefer a different design. lol
