Whenever I make videos related to Iaido (katana drawing martial art), there are many people who tell me… “The Kata (fixed sword exercises) are useless because they are not practical!” But I think those who say this don’t fully understand the purpose of training Kata.
You will never ever use the Kata as it is in a real battle. This is because the purpose of kata is not to perform the technique as it is, but to learn the basic operation of the body and weapons of that martial art. It’s almost like a textbook. You won’t be able to directly use the example sentence of a language textbook, or the formulas of a math textbook right? In other words, if you tell someone to fight each other with shinai without learning any Kata, it will just be a fight.
You will learn basic physical control through kata, learn the structure of the katana and your own body through kenjutsu, check the accuracy of your swings through tameshigiri (test cutting), and train your courage through gekiken... It is said that only by training in all of these you will finally understand what fighting with a katana is about.
