In 2020, Japan's Kagawa Prefecture enacted “an ordinance to combat Internet and gaming addiction.” Parents in Kagawa Prefecture are required to have their children follow these rules…
1. Gaming time for those under 18 is 60 minutes per day (on weekdays 90 minutes)
2. Smartphone use is until 9 p.m. for junior high school students and younger (until 10 p.m. for older students)
The ordinance has continued to be controversial, and even in 2022, a parent and child filed a lawsuit against the prefecture but was eventually dismissed.
Defenders of the ordinance point out that addiction to smartphones and games worsens social problems such as “hikikomori.”
On the other hand, the opposing side argues that taking away a person's freedom of choice is unacceptable. Also, the main cause of “hikikomori” is relationships at school and at home, and it is not right to put the blame on smartphones/games.
My thoughts?
In today's world, where there are professional gamers and the economy revolves around smartphones, it would be ridiculous to rob children of that future. If we are going to take away video games/phones from children, we should urgently restrict the more addictive ones such as cigarettes, alcohol, and gambling. Anyways, please let me know your opinions!
