You probably have the image that Shinsengumi were heroes of justice who prevented a number of violent incidents during the Bakumatsu period (the end of the Edo period 1853-1869). However, did you know they were actually killing each other a lot within the squad too?

For example, Serizawa Kamo, who was the leader of the Shinsengumi alongside Kondo at its founding, was assassinated for his bad drinking habits. Another man, Ito Koshitaro, who joined the squad a while after its foundation, tried to assassinate Kondo and was killed in a counterattack.

More than 50 other members were believed to have been sentenced to death through seppuku. This is due to the very strict rules within the squad called 局中法度 Kyokuchu-Hatto. This rule consists of five items and breaking any of them will result in seppuku. Since the organization was originally created by gathering people who were low-status thugs, this code was intended to prove that they had become samurai.

Thus, Yamanami Keisuke, who had been second in command alongside Hijikata, was also ordered to commit seppuku when he tried to leave the unit.

The situation within the Shinsengumi alone shows how turbulent the Bakumatsu period was.
