The famous film “Memoirs of Geisha” is about maiko and geiko, but the dances they do are not the Nihonbuyo (Japanese traditional dance) that real maiko train and perform. There are three reasons why.
1. Their Facial Expressions
In all Japanese traditional dancing, facial expressions must not be shown. This is to have the audience imagine the emotions of the character.
2. The “Kata” Movements
Not only budo (martial arts), but all Japanese traditional cultures are structured by Kata; the sets of fixed movements. In order for a culture to be carried down for centuries, anyone needs to be able to dance exactly the same way.
3. The Height of the Center of Gravity
In budo we are taught to always keep our body low for more stableness, but this is the same in traditional dancing.
However, I am by no means trying to deny the film or the dance, and I think it is enjoyable as a fiction movie.
