Once nearly extinct in Idaho, burbot — a freshwater member of the cod family — are making a remarkable comeback. With support from University of Idaho, the Kootenai Tribe and others, populations have surged from fewer than 50 in the wild to over 20,000.
Now, U of I researchers are shifting focus from conservation to aquaculture — studying disease prevention, reproduction and domestication to turn burbot into a viable, sustainable option for fish farming in Idaho and beyond.
