A lot of learners approach piano improvisation the wrong way, and basically try to think too hard about every last detail of what they’re doing. In this tutorial we look at what actually happens in competent improvisers’ brains as they play, and the way they learn, deal with and organise musical skills and information. If you understand this principle, you can put it to work in your own piano practice and make fast progress with your improvisation.
In this tutorial I use a jazz piano improvisation as an example, but the principles I’m talking about apply to any style of improv (and not just on the piano).
