this video looks at my comparison between the new Fujifilm X-H1 and my existing X-T2
Fujifilm recently announced its newest camera to the world offering some really cool specs that will be attracting a whole lot of people. Before going into why I am not going to get it, lets talk about what it offers more than what I already have (The excellent Fujifilm X-T2). I will not bore you with the details but give you a summary of where the XH1 steps up the game.
The sensor now floats
In terms of the sensor both cameras are exactly the same. For resolution, no AA fiter, sensor type (X Trans CMOS III), sensor pixel size, native ISO sensitivity, you will not see a change. But now the camera sensor moves in the sense that it has 5 axis in body image stabilization. You will also see a change in the processor. Not in the sensor generation but the number of sensors. The XH1 sports two X-Processor pros whereas the XT2 only sports one.
Ergonomically
Now there are a couple of ergonomic differences that are worth noting. They have already taken the already amazing 2.3 million dots on the EVF and brought it up to the an amazing 3.7 million. It is indeed a bit of a bigger camera than the XT2 but not by much. This might have a great deal to do with the 25% thicker magnesium alloy body. It now offers a top screen a bit reminiscent of the GFX50 which is a nice addition. Also they now give you the bonus of the touchscreen of the XT20 on to the higher end camera. Something I thought was really nice.
Other additions
Other additions include buit in bluetooth mode anda new film simulation mode. In terms of photo metering, the camera has essentially not changed at all. Both have 256 zone metering with multi,spot,average, and center modes and the 325 point hybrid AF system.
Video workflow
Here is where the XH1 really does shine. I believe that the Fujifilm XH1 is to video what the GH5s is to photo. That being that Fuji found themselves being pinned as strictly a photo camera company and less of a video camera company. All the time knowing that they could really serve the video market. The XH1 is their way of saying that they can do video just as well as the big boys. The same as the GH5s is Panasonic saying that they can do stills just as good as the big boys. Here are some of the new video great features on the XH1
4K recording is moved up to cinema 4K at 4096X2160 instead of 3840X2160
Auto focus phase detection range is larger useable by a couple more stops
60p is offered at a higher bit rate than on the XT2
Internal F log recording and higher internal 4K bitrates
So why will I not get this camera
Well to put it simply. Nothing in the way I work would make me want to make the step up. Although an amazaing camera, I find that, for stills nothing has really changed. It offers you minimal upgrade from an already amazing X-T2 stills camera experience. Mind you, I believe that anyone who wants a stills camera for macro, run and gun portraits, or extreme low light photography might seriously consider this camera due to the fact that the IBIS will be a welcome addition. I personally however have lived without IBIS for years and have subsequently modified my way of shooting to be simply more stable. Being the owner of an XT2 and an XT20, I find no need for this type of upgrade. However, even had I not owned these cameras, I still think that the feature upgrade would still not justify the added expense of an XH1. ( Price of the Xh1 body at the date of this writing is 1899 as opposed the the XT2 at 1599)
If I had a bitdepth problem I would probably get an Atomos because while solving the problem of bit depth quality I would also solve the problem of a limited monitor at the same time. For the stills side I simply say. If it works do not fix it. The XT2 is already where I want it to be in terms of focusing power, EVF quality, and image processing power. I know that other people might see these features as being an upgrade but for what I do it is definitely a no go.
