In the 1970s, USDA Secretary Earl Butz told farmers to get big or get out. That message is still shaping how small-scale farmers think — and it's costing them money.
After a decade of interviews, the pattern is clear: the farms that expanded fastest are rarely the ones that lasted longest. More land multiplies everything, including logistics, travel time, maintenance, and problems. If your current operation has inefficiencies, more land doesn't fix them. It scales them.
Four reasons expansion can hurt you, and the 5 questions to ask before taking on any new space: What exactly will I grow there? Who's already buying it? Can my labor handle it? Does it connect to my existing infrastructure? What's my rotation plan for months one, three, and six?
The math: 100 beds × 4 rotations × $400/harvest = $160,000. Get 5 rotations from the same beds = $200,000. That's $40,000 more without a single new square foot. Jody Robuck doubled his farm's turnover since COVID adding only 9 new beds — through tighter rotations, not more land. Ian Caselli farms 2,000 square feet, calculated his hours, set a cap, and stopped — even when there was more work to do.
Land is a tool, not a trophy. The answer to "how do I make more money" is almost never "get more land." It's better beds, not more beds.
