The hardest part of farming isn't starting. It's what happens when things start working — when customers show up, when market days get bigger, when you need more beds, more hands, more of everything. That's when the foundation cracks.
Six things that break when you scale: the labor trap (an employee's cost isn't just their wage — it's training time, tasks that take twice as long, mistakes, and management overhead; don't hire until you can prove they generate more value than they cost, including the cost of your attention), the founder bottleneck (growing food and running a farm business are two completely different skill sets), infrastructure debt (every season you defer maintenance, you borrow against next season's time and money — and the interest rate goes up), the complexity multiplier (double your growing space and you don't double your problems, you multiply them — 10 crops, 4 markets, 5 employees isn't 5x harder, it's closer to 50x), the identity crisis (your farm needs someone who makes sure great growing happens whether you're in the field or not), and money conflict with a partner (when the stakes go up, $200 disagreements become "are we going to lose the farm" arguments — agree on the rules in January, not July).
