Liquid Death convinced people to pay $2 for a can of water — the most commoditized product on the planet — by refusing to look like every other water brand. They didn't make better water. They made memorable water.
In a crowded market, the product that wins isn't the best one. It's the one people remember. This video breaks down six ways to differentiate, whether you're selling salad mix, water, or anything in between.
Compete on less, not more (Trader Joe's carries ~4,000 products against a normal store's 30,000–50,000 — curation is the strategy). Create a new category instead of fighting for share (the blue ocean — Liquid Death didn't beat Dasani, they made it irrelevant). Make simplicity a moat (In-N-Out has run three things since 1948 and people wait 45 minutes for it). Sell the experience, not the product (nobody remembers a transaction — they remember how it felt). Be the craft version (9,000+ independent breweries don't need the whole market, just their corner). And the hard one: know exactly who you're for, and accept who you're not for.
None of this requires a bigger budget or a fancier product. It requires a decision — the decision to stop blending in.
