The wildfires up in Canada and the Saharan dust storms are mixing record amounts of particulate matter into the atmosphere in North America. These two things combined with dust create dramatic sunrise and sunsets as well as moonrises. This is all caused by particulate matter in the atmosphere. It's a great time to be outside especially early and late in the day to capture photographs. The more particulate matter in the sky, the larger the sun and moon are magnified as the particulates act like a warming filter on a camera lens. Color is measured in degrees of kelvin. When the sun is directly overhead on a clear sunny day, the kelvin measurement is right at 5500. The later in the day we go, the kelvin drops all the way to sunset. We saw noon measurements of kelvin in Chicago as low as 2500K last month because of the fires in Canada. It's a great time to be outside shooting landscapes at various times of day right now. Get out there and shoot!
