Korčula, Croatia, was one of the highlights of our Croatia island-hopping cruise. In fact, our crew said that Korčula was their favorite island to visit. So why do Croatians and tourists alike love Korčula? As you'll see, Korčula is a combination of 15th century history and architecture combined with 21st century fun. As you approach the Old Town from the Adriatic Sea, you can see the medieval walls that surround the town. When you walk through the main gate, you go back in time, as many of the buildings were built in the 15th-16th centuries. In fact, the highlight of my visit to Korčula was climbing the narrowest steps known to man, in the 500 year-old St. Mark's Cathedral Bell Tower. The views from the top were incredible. Just as exciting was climbing a ladder straight up in a medieval building to enter the popular rooftop bar, Massimo. My guide Goran introduced me to two shop owners who each gave us a very interesting tour of their shops: one was an olive oil/wine shop, and the other was a coral jewelry shop. We then arrived at one of the oldest churches in Korčula, St. Peter's Church, and next door is the house of Marco Polo, or is it? We then see a beautiful Korčula sunset, followed by a quick tour of Korčula at night.
