Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto | Why Carps Fly in May in Japan #Shorts @LetsaskShogo | Uploaded 1 year ago | Updated 9 hours ago
If you visit Japan in May, you will see carp flags like this one fluttering in the wind everywhere. This is decorated to celebrate Children's Day on May 5. This day was originally a traditional Chinese event. In Japan, people ate certain foods and decorated dolls of armored warriors to ward off evil spirits and pray for the healthy growth of children.

And the carp flags have a meaning derived from a Chinese legend that carp climb up waterfalls. According to legend, a carp that climbs the waterfall called Longmen on the Yellow River in China will transform into a dragon. If you are a Pokemon fan like I am, I’m sure you’re familiar about this. Because of this legend, the carp flags are regarded as symbols that wish children to grow up healthy and achieve their hopes and goals.
