In a book called Hagakure written during the Edo period, there is a famous quote that says “Bushido is about dying.” Because this one phrase has become popular, many people have an image that Bushido is something scary. In order to truly understand what this means, we need to deepen our knowledge about this book a little more.
What the author of Hagakure consistently says is that a samurai must always have a clear idea of his beliefs and be able to act without thinking when the time comes.
Let’s say you’ve faced a life or death situation. What clouds our judgment at that time, is our obsession with life.
This book teaches us to believe that our lives are already over every morning so that we won’t get lost in the moment. But you can't do that unless you have a clear belief in life and that you are always living without regret. This is what the author means by “Bushido is about dying."
