Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto | How the Three Types of Characters in Japanese were Born #Shorts @LetsaskShogo | Uploaded 1 year ago | Updated 6 hours ago
If you’re studying Japanese, I’m sure you’ve been struggling with learning the three types of characters. But why do Japanese have so many characters in the first place?

The first character that was used in Japan was surprisingly kanji (since the 4th to 5th century). The word “漢字 Kanji” means “the letters of Kan,” the characters that were used in the Han dynasty of China.

However only using Kanji to express Japanese was difficult, so that’s why the unique hiragana and katakana were created in the early Heian period (794-1185) as simpler characters. Hiragana was created by simplifying or breaking down kanji for more casual writing,
such as letters, waka poems, and essays. Katakana was created by taking parts of kanji characters for Buddhist monks to make it easier to read sutras.

So it might be tough learning all three, but without them, it would be a completely different language.
