Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto | What Do the Colors Mean? @LetsaskShogo | Uploaded 4 months ago | Updated 6 hours ago
If you visit the various shrines in Japan, you will realize that the Torii gates have different colors. They are mainly red or white. White was originally mainly used as an expression of holiness. This is also the reason why the kimono worn by women when getting married, the Shiro-muku (white kimono), is completely white. After Buddhism spread in Japan, the color red became mainstream. In Buddhism, the color red (vermilion) is meant to ward off evil. Vermilion is always used in the makeup of maiko to prevent them from being exposed to evil spirits, as white powder makes them look like ghosts. However, there are other torii that are not painted, blue, black, yellow, gold, and pink. Please look for them when you travel Japan. By the way, the torii represents the shrine's boundary, and once you enter it, it indicates that you are in a sacred space. It would be polite to bow before and after you pass the gates.
