Have you ever seen in Japanese anime or movies the act of two people crossing their pinkies together when making a promise? That is called Yubikiri (finger cutting) Genman in Japanese, and did you know that its origin is actually terrifying?

Yubikiri (finger cutting) is said to have originated in the culture of yujyo prostitutes during the Edo period. Although prostitutes dealt with a large number of men, they used various methods to gove out the message of "you are special" in order to be liked by the men. One of them was to cut off her own pinky finger and give it to her clients. Thus, the act of cutting off a finger came to signify making a deep vow.

By the way, Genman means 10,000 punches, and there is a song that goes with the promise saying that the penalty for breaking it is drinking 1,000 needles. I hope no one has actually suffered these, but it’s a very horrifying song.
