Lets ask Shogo | Your Japanese friend in Kyoto | Gifts You Never Want to Give to Your Superiors in Japan #Shorts @LetsaskShogo | Uploaded 1 year ago | Updated 10 hours ago
Japanese society has many rules regarding gifts because of the strict hierarchical relationship. Please be careful not to carelessly give the following things to your superiors. They each could be perceived as containing an unspoken message.

1.Shoes and socks: Giving someone "something you step on" implies that you look down on them
2.Writing utensils: “Use this and do your best”
3.Wristwatch, bag: "Be more diligent (Work harder)”
4.Belt: " Pull yourself together"

Yes I know, Japanese culture can be very tiresome. However in a collectivist society like Japan people lack direct communication skills, so we developed a culture where such a ritualistic exchange is important.

In the end, however, what matters is the relationship with that specific person. For example, if you’ve heard before that the other person wanted certain writing utensils or a bag, breaking the general rule might not be a problem.

The management (filming, editing, etc.) of the new Asayama Ichiden Ryu's English Channel "Let's ask Seki Sensei" is completely my voluntary work. If I am not able to pay for the expensive bullet train fare from Kyoto to Ibaraki Prefecture (where the main Dojo is located), and hotel/filming expenses, this activity will cease. Please help us spread and preserve this 400-year-old martial art. In return, I will try my best to create the most educational and exciting content about Japanese Kobudo.
