When you imagine an alcoholic beverage unique to Japan, I think most people would think of saké. But have you ever heard of Shōchu before?
Shochu is a distilled spirit unique to Japan, made from 16 different ingredients including rice, barley, potatoes, and buckwheat.
Shochu was a commoner’s drink made in farmers' gardens from around the Sengoku period. Around the 20th century, with the development of production, delivery, and refrigeration techniques, shochu quickly became popular throughout the country.
Today, it’s probably more difficult to find an izakaya (Japanese-style pub) that doesn’t serve Shōchu. Especially highballs, a mixture of shochu and soda water, are very popular.
It is said that barley shochu is the easiest to drink for beginners, so please try it with water.
