In this video, I trace the origins of American exceptionalism from John Winthrop's "City Upon a Hill" sermon in 1630 through Alexis de Tocqueville's observations in the 1830s, to its weaponization during the Cold War. I explore how this idea — that America is fundamentally different and superior to other nations — has held the country back from learning from the successes of other countries.
