Did one of the world’s earliest cities manage to avoid extreme inequality? In this video, I discuss the ancient city of Mohenjo-daro and a fascinating new study published in Antiquity that challenges traditional ideas about hierarchy in the Bronze Age. Using archaeological excavation data and a Gini coefficient analysis, researchers argue that inequality in Mohenjo-daro may actually have declined as the city became larger and more prosperous.
Unlike ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, the Indus Civilisation left behind no clear evidence of kings, royal palaces, or rigid social classes. Instead, Mohenjo-daro reveals a city with remarkably standardised housing, sophisticated urban planning, extensive drainage systems, and signs of collective organisation.
