Al-Shabaab, short for Ḥarakat ash-Shabāb al-Mujāhidīn meaning 'the Mujahideen Youth Movement' is an Islamist movement from Somalia, active in East Africa and across the Gulf of Aden in Yemen. The group has its origin in the Somali Civil War of the 1990s, though it was officially founded in 2006 during the Ethiopian Invasion of Somalia. They continued to fight against the Ethiopians and AMISOM generally throughout the 2000s, capturing territory in the South of Somalia as well as crossing the border into neighbouring Kenya to expand their operations.
