The Northman is a 2022 film directed by Robert Eggers starring Alexander Skarsgård as Amleth, a man on a quest for revenge following the murder of his father at the hands of his uncle. The film is set in the Viking Age, and has strong themes of revenge, violence and honour running throughout. This has caused some to worry that its message and imagery might be co-opted by White Supremacists who claim the Norse of the past share their own racist views. In this video I'll be addressing such claims, including some that the Northman can be interpreted in such a way or that it fits with such a distorted view of the past. Join me as I explore the rich world of the Viking Age through the lens of the Northman, and why I disagree with several of the points made in the article.
