“When we meditate, we meditate with the absolute reality, go beyond. But when we come out in the relative level, we need to respect the relative.”
- Mingyur Rinpoche
In a special recording for Tergar Institute’s Madhyamaka course, Mingyur Rinpoche dives into the importance of holding space for both the relative and ultimate truths. Here, Rinpoche describes that when we meditate, we go beyond the relative, into the realm of the absolute, but that does not mean that we completely reject the relative. In fact, we must respect the relative on our meditation journeys.
Rinpoche uses the example of two glasses of water: one is clean and the other is dirty. Though on the absolute level both of these glasses are empty, on the relative level we must use our wisdom of discernment and respect the consequences of drinking either glass of water. “Don’t drink dirty water…your stomach will have big problem! Cause and effect are important to abandon negativity and connect with compassion.”
