When Videogames broke tradition:
Starting off we have Super Princess Peach breaking gaming's most iconic tradtions, Mario rescuing Peach from Bowser's kidnapping. Here, it's simply the opposite. Peach now has to save Mario from Bowser with her parasol and emotional powers.
Up next is Pac-Man World 3. Pac-Man is known for being a completely silent character, even in this subseries of his. However, come Pac-Man World 3 and he is now so much of a yapper it's not even funny.
Resident Evil 7 Biohazard breaks RE's tradition of having a 3rd person over the shoulder/tank camera angle by being in 1st person. This helped the game go for a more claustrophobic and surreal feeling.
When Chrono Trigger came out, it blew players' minds with the possibility of its main character Crono to die in your save file permanently and continuing on with your party without him. You have the option to revive him, but you get all the way to the credits even if he's dead.
And finally we have the most groundbreaking, and also tradition-breaking, World of Warcraft which pivots away from the top-down strategy style of the previous 3 warcraft games by giving birth to one of gaming's biggest genres to this day: The Mass Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game or MMORPG for short.
