The new Family Guy spin-off, Stewie, was just announced… and I have some mixed feelings.
The show follows Stewie after he gets kicked out of preschool and starts at a brand-new school, where his inventions lead to time travel and all kinds of crazy sci-fi adventures.
Here’s what I’m thinking…
Fox ordered two seasons of Stewie, which is expected to premiere during the 2027–28 TV season. Rather than following Stewie at home with the Griffin family, the series puts him in a new preschool after he’s expelled from his old one. There he meets an entirely new cast, and his inventions turn ordinary school days into time-travel and space adventures.
My biggest question is… did Stewie even need his own show?
Over the past several years, Family Guy has already become heavily focused on Stewie. It almost feels like he’s been the main character for a while now, so I’m not sure a spin-off was really necessary.
Another thing that worries me is Brian.
Some of the best Family Guy episodes ever made are the Brian and Stewie episodes, so if Brian isn’t a major part of this series, I think that’s a huge risk.
It also reminds me a little of The Cleveland Show. Cleveland was a great supporting character, but his spin-off never reached the same level as Family Guy. Hopefully this doesn’t end up going down that same path.
That being said… I do think Stewie is one of the few characters who actually could carry a spin-off.
I also like that they’re leaning into his inventions, time travel, and sci-fi adventures instead of just making another family sitcom.
The biggest wildcard for me is the brand-new supporting cast. Sometimes new characters completely change a show for the better… and sometimes they’re completely forgettable.
So overall, I’m cautiously optimistic.
