Sometimes there isn’t a toilet nearby. If cat holes are allowed where you are recreating, use the right method.
Move at least 200 feet from water, trails, roads, and campsites. Choose durable ground where you can safely walk without damaging fragile resources such as biological soil crust. Dig a hole about 6 to 8 inches deep, use it, cover it completely, and disguise the area when finished.
Do not dig cat holes in areas where visitors are required to pack out human waste. Some desert, alpine, river canyon, slot canyon, frozen-ground, and high-use areas require special equipment or pack-out systems. Know before you go.
When in doubt, pack it out.
