The Cynical Historian | When is modernity? - Historiography #Shorts 4 @CynicalHistorian | Uploaded 3 years ago | Updated 10 minutes ago
Something changed around the beginning of the Renaissance. As scholars began to devote their pursuits to a more varied set of objectives, a plethora of sources came about. Historians still argue over the divide between the Medieval and Modern Eras. It depends on how one defines the difference. Normally, the time between the Renaissance and Age of Revolutions which began in the mid 18th Century is the demarcation for the Early Modern Era. From there onto the World Wars is the High Modern Era, and from there onto the present is called Contemporary History. In modern times, there’s far more literacy and writing, the printing press to spread ideas, a push for advancement both socially and scientifically, while also more interconnectedness around the world. So defining when that starts could be the Fall of Constantinople, the invention of the printing press, or when Columbus reported his landing in the New World. Because of this break in sourcing and general public disposition, historians generally divide themselves between medievalists and modernists, as in those who study the past before or after that hazily defined periodization.
