The Cynical Historian | Ancient Historians | Historiography #Shorts 2 @CynicalHistorian | Uploaded 3 years ago | Updated 2 hours ago
The first historians came in Greece during the 5th Century before Christ. Herodotus described the past in an entertaining, if not so accurate narrative. His successor, Thucydides, used more rigor and analysis to tell the story of the Peloponnesian War, which he had participated in. These two lit the way for future historians by showing what history is and how to write it. The word story and history derive from the same root, so history is just telling a true story, whether in the Herodotus fashion of entertaining narrative or Thucydides’s more analytical and accurate fashion. For the next couple millennia, this was the primary divide between historians. In the ancient world, they are pretty much our sole sources.
