This one's definitely getting demonetized. The causes of any war are complicated. While sometimes they may have a one word simplification, though this is not one of those, that word bellies so much depth that cannot be conveyed by such an oversimplification. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either an imbecile or a charlatan. In the case of the Iraq War, it's from American interest in the region (due to oil), Saddam's tyranny, and long-standing fear heightened by 9/11. So while oil is at the root, many other factors take equal standing. The causation of the Iraq War is quite convoluted, full of twists and turns. It's ultimately a continuance of previous conflicts, heightened by the War on Terror. Those previous conflicts had their roots in Cold War alliances to protect global energy, as in oil, as the US turned from Iran to Iraq after 1979 and then from neither in 1988, leading to the Gulf War as the precursor to 2003.

Wiki: The rationale for the Iraq War, both the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the subsequent hostilities, was controversial because the George W. Bush administration began actively pressing for military intervention in Iraq in late 2001. The primary rationalization for the Iraq War was articulated by a joint resolution of the United States Congress known as the Iraq Resolution. The US claimed the intent was to "disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, to end Saddam Hussein's support for terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people". [1] For the invasion of Iraq the rationale was "the United States relied on the authority of UN Security Council Resolutions 678 and 687 to use all necessary means to compel Iraq to comply with its international obligations".
