Could you tell who someone was just by the pattern on their sweater? In the small Cornish village of Polperro, this might have been possible.
In this video, we dive into the story behind the fisherman’s knit-frock, a traditional, hand-knitted jumper once worn by local fishermen and passed down through generations.
Join Gareth Powell as he visits the Polperro Heritage Museum, once a busy fish factory and now a Grade II listed building full of memories. Inside, you’ll find original knit-frocks, old photos, and objects that tell the story of life in this coastal village.
These jumpers weren’t just for keeping warm. Each one had a pattern unique to a family, helping identify fishermen at sea. Through conversations with locals and items from the museum, we explore how these garments connect people to place, family, and tradition.
The Jolliff's were one such family, and we also visit the Three Pilchards Inn, where local legend Charles Jolliff ran the pub.
