Ever have a class that just… won’t talk?

No discussion.
No debate.
No Socratic seminar.

Here’s the reframe: students only engage as much as they feel safe.

Instead of forcing conversation or getting frustrated, the move is to meet students where they are and slowly grow them into where they need to be.

That might look like:

Writing first before talking

One- or two-sentence responses instead of open discussion

Pair-shares instead of whole-class conversations

Micro-questions, micro-conversations, micro-experiments

This isn’t lowering expectations.
It’s scaffolding confidence.

Teaching isn’t about running the class the way we prefer—it’s about building the class the students in front of us can handle right now, while still stretching them forward.

Small tweaks lead to big breakthroughs.
