The Admiral Byrd diary may be the strangest document in U.S. Navy history — and Operation Highjump is where it starts. In 1946 the Navy sent Admiral Richard Byrd, 4,700 men, 13 warships and 33 aircraft to Antarctica on what they called an exploration mission. Every ship was a warship. It was scheduled for eight months and ended in eight weeks.
