After at least two people were killed and around 80 rescued, questions remain about the start of the deadly floods in the Grand Canyon and about how fast they hit.
Flash flooding that struck the Grand Canyon on Aug. 29 was caused by a combination of factors, not just rainfall.
One factor was the perimeter of the Dragon Bravo wildfire, which destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge at the North Rim in 2025. The fire’s burn scar sat above canyons including Bright Angel Trail, which leads down to the Colorado River. That area is where the flooding took place.
